Charles Reed from Rockville Virginia is a new vendor in the market..... his specialty is wood carved products including bowls, spoons and spatulas out of cherry and maple. Charles was a happy craftsman and vendor after the busy market last Saturday!

Dayspring Farm bringing Flowers to Market

Jenny Maloney from Dayspring Farm will be bringing buckets of flowers to make custom bouquets to brighten people's homes as well as flowers available by the stem such as sunflowers, zinnias, and tuberoses! She will also be bringing an assortment of local ecologically grown seasonal veggies such as a salad tomato mix, eggplant, peppers, okra and culinary herbs!

Kids Sidewalk Chalk Drawing Contest

Announcing a contest for kids 18 and under.... a children's sidewalk chalk drawing contest for August 17 market. Sign ups are at 10:00 a.m. in the Welcome Tent and each entrant will be assigned a 2 x 2 foot space where they are to draw something they see or like at the market. It's free to enter, but there are only a limited number of spaces. While many consider themselves children at heart, the contest is for children aged 18 or under! The contest will be judged by a panel of local artists and cash and other prizes will be awarded.

Dennis Conley Guest Artist August

Dennis N. Conley was born in Virginia and moved to Essex County in 1961 with his parents William and Nancy Conley having routes in Essex and Northumberland Counties. Dennis graduated from Essex High School and attended Rappahannock Community College. After a long career of over 30 years with the postal service he retired as Postmaster of Center Cross, Virginia. He loves muscle cars, gardening, and nature. Growing up along the Rappahannock River gave him the opportunity to enjoy every moment of the river with its endless beauty and pleasures. This love helped him explore his interest in art, which he expresses in his paintings and wood burning. Dennis resides in Dunnsville near Ware's Wharf with his biggest fan, his wife Sandy, and his yellow lab Bill. They have two grown sons, Stephen and Brian, their wives and four grandchildren.

"Mary Creighton and Brandon Hennessey, Featured Artists" 6:00pm-8:00pm, "Art after Dark"  This Friday, July 19, the Tappahannock Art Gallery will present the work of Mary Creighton and Brandon Hennessey, who will be the featured artists at the Farmer's Market on Saturday, July 20. Mary, who has been a local educator will show some of her fine glass painting skills. Brandon, who is a 2D mixed media artist, has recently been focusing on portraitures.  Bring your friends and relatives to downtown Prince Street to meet our guest artists and preview their work while you are treated to your favorite wines and tasty morsels.  For additional information call Frank Rixey at 445-5131.

Music by Tina Marie for the July market

Tina Marie provides the musical entertainment for the July market. She grew up in North Carolina and has been submersed in music her entire life. Her first instrument was piano, but now she is a vocalist and guitarist.

She also plays a little harmonica, mandolin, accordion and percussion. "I always loved to sing, and loved picking out harmonies. All through school I was always in any and every choir, chorus or vocal ensemble I could get into", says Tina. She played with various bands in Richmond all through the 90's; The Attics, Bart Chucker Band, Mad Marjorie and Whistler's Mother. After a stint in NYC, Tina moved back to Richmond in 2005, and formed a band, which ultimately became Vinyl Tease. Her vocal style has great range and emotion, with a bluesy undertone – check out Tina on the courthouse steps in one of her two sessions starting at 9:30 am and at 11:15 am.

 

July guest artist Mary Helton Creighton

Tappahannock Farmers' Market welcomes July guest artist Mary Helton Creighton...... Mary had planned to make a career of teaching, however, after several years, the artist in her wanted to be unleashed. She originally started with craftwork but during a farmers market on the Northern Neck, she saw someone hand-painting "sunset" windows, and thought "I can do that. "She started not only hand-painting sunset windows, but also wineglasses, cocktail glasses, and even martini glasses, all with her "signature" blue crab design. She now has increased her artistic repertoire to include striped bass, mahi-mahi, flounder, ospreys, and snowy egrets. Check her out at booth #31 on Saturday, July 20th....

Tappahannock Farmers' Market welcomes guest artist Brandon Hennessey...... Born and raised in the heart of Virginia, Brandon is a multimedia artist who graduated with a B.F.A. in Visual Arts at Longwood University, and currently teaches and inspires the young artists of the Prince Edward County. His artwork has been featured by Longwood University to represent the study abroad program and he placed second in the photo contest.  Brandon has recently moved his interests into portraiture artwork, currently working on a series of famous icons, such as John Lennon and Marilyn Monroe. Portraiture has given him a new outlet for artistic expression, beyond beautiful scenery. He claims there is something charming about capturing a person's personality and character in a portrait and it gives him much satisfaction.

Essex Bank, a supporter of Tappahannock Farmers Market since its
inception in 2010, has expanded its role in the market this
year. In response to an identified need for sturdy, reusable market
bags for shoppers, Essex Bank stepped forward and is now sponsoring
official Tappahannock Farmers Market bags. "Essex Bank has always
shared a special relationship with the people of Essex County and
surrounding communities," said Carter Crews, manager of Essex Bank's
Prince Street branch. "We were happy to be able to strengthen our
support of Tappahannock Farmers Market by supplying market bags for
the 2013 season."
"We take seriously our role as a community bank," said Nina
Robertson, manager of Essex Bank's Main Office on Tappahannock
Boulevard. "But Tappahannock Farmers Market is also serious fun!
Carter and I are enjoying the chance to mix and mingle with our

Flower-Themed Art Competition With Prizes - "Flowers and Art at the Farmer's Market" Saturday, May 18 From 10 - Noon

Entries are encouraged and welcomed for the Flower-Themed Photography and Painting Contest:

Each person can enter up to two pieces of flower-themed art, any size, in the photography and painting competition. Ribbons will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in each Under 18 and Adult Over 18 category, and a cash prize will be awarded to First Place for each of these categories: $50 in the Under 18, and $100 in the Adult Over 18 category. Entries must be presented to the judging stand on Cross Street by the courthouse not later than 10 a.m. Saturday. Winners will be announced and prizes awarded at Noon.

The next Farmers' Market in Tappahannock will be held on Saturday, May 18, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Because, as everyone knows, April Showers Bring May Flowers there will be flowers galore – cut ones for arrangements inside the home as well as annuals, perennials, herbs, and native plants for gardens. May TFM Music Man: Ben Eberline

Ben Eberline, a Tappahannock native, has played acoustic roots music for over a decade. Playing both original music and tastefully altered covers, his unique Americana style blends blues, country, rock, and bluegrass with strong songwriting into performances that fit perfectly with a warm summer day by the riverside. Now based in Richmond, Ben travels around Virginia regularly playing live music in a variety of venues.

Kathryn Murray - May Guest Artist

Almost all her photos were taken on the Northern Neck and most are images of places within a mile of the home she shares with her husband at Naylors Beach.  Her digital images are "pure" photography since they employ no program to adjust colors or effects. All of the colors are as they were found in nature. Many of the images were taken in early morning or late evening. These are her favorite times to be out and to see. The subtlety of the colors and the luminescent light provide great opportunities to capture a scene. These locations might appear mundane, but during the right season, at the right time or with the right weather they are completely transformed. The artist considers her work often to be "Northern Neck Meditations." Kathryn grew up in Cold Spring Harbor New York and went to college and studied Art History at Bryn Mawr. While in New York City for 10 years after college, she worked in design-related businesses which included advertising, architecture and furniture design. She has been an avid photographer for many years. Her work can be found at the Gresham House Gallery (Tappahannock), Rappahannock Art League (Kilmarnock), Art on Main (Gloucester). She has have lived on the Northern Neck for twenty years and find it a most beautiful place to photograph. Her work has been published in House and Home Magazine, on the covers of the Northern Neck Visitors Guide (2010 and 2011), many covers of the Real Estate Review and two annual reports for 2011.

May Flowers at the May 18th Market

May Farmers Market will feature the theme "Virginia Flowers" and will include an art competition, flower arranging demonstration, and presentations with gardening ideas on flowers and flowering shrubs and trees that do well in our region. There will be two categories for the art competition: "Youth under 18" with a $50 prize awarded to first place winner, and "Adult over 18" with a $100 prize awarded to first place winner.  Entries must be flower-themed paintings and photography, and must be presented at the entry table on the Fountain Green Welcome Tent lawn not later than 10 a.m. the morning of May 18th.  Art judges will review the entries and winners will be announced at Noon.  In addition to the cash prize for the two first place winners, ribbons will be awarded for first, second, and third place in both Youth and Adult categories.  Entries will be on display from 11 a.m. until Noon and the gardening talks and demonstrations will be from 11:30 until Noon.
